Title: [OT] Two 9/11 reflective links
Dear Friends,

There are likely to be more than a few of these going around this week. I thought both the Omega letter and links below and the tribute to heroes were important ways to reflect on the memory of 9/11 and the tasks for the future.

Subject: Message of peace and hope from Omega

September 2002 Dear Friend,

Greetings from Omega Institute. We want to take this time, as we draw near to the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, to send out a message of hope and peace.

Omega's mission is to generate peace, integration, hope, and healing in the world. It is clear to us we all need to focus our thoughts and prayers toward creating peace in the world. In her book Peace Pilgrim, the author writes, "One little person, giving all of her time to peace, makes news. Many people, giving some of their time, can make history."

We've gathered several inspirational quotes about peace from many of the world's peacemakers, old and new. Below these, we've also listed several websites you can click on to learn more about how you can get involved on a more global level in helping make the world a more peaceful place. --With blessings of Peace from the Omega Staff **********

Want to get involved?
If you'd like to take socially active steps for world peace, please pass this on. For further steps, Omega recommends these websites:

International Day of Peace and Cease-Fire, September 21, 2002
In a unanimous vote, the United Nations General Assembly has declared an International Day of Peace and Cease-Fire, to be celebrated every year on September 21, beginning in 2002, this year. We at the Omega Institute wholeheartedly endorse this International Day of Peace and Cease-Fire. We encourage you to join in this great celebration of world peace on September 21, in whatever ways you can. Many events are being organized worldwide, ranging from 24-hour vigils to one minute of silence at noon local time.

The World Peace Prayer Society is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, member-supported organization dedicated to spreading the message and prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth" all over the world. The society has offices in New York, Japan, Munich, and San Francisco, as well as the beautiful World Peace Sanctuary in Wassaic, New York, home of the Annual World Peace Festival. Congressman Dennis Kucinich's proposed Department of Peace
On July 11, 2001 Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH-10) introduced legislation to create a cabinet level agency dedicated to peacemaking and the study of conditions that are conducive to peace. Congressman Kucinich said, "At the dawn of a new millennium, there is no better time to review age-old challenges with new thinking that peace is not only the absence of violence, but the presence of a higher evolution of human awareness with respect, trust and integrity toward humankind. Our founding fathers recognized that peace was one of the highest duties of the newly organized free and independent states. But too often, we have overlooked the long-term solution of peace for instant gratification of war. This continued downward spiral of violence must stop to ensure that future generations will live in peace and harmony."
