It's pretty painless - the one thing to watch out for is to make sure you use the 'userreferenceargument' when you pass the user back and forth between secure/nonsecure pages as this is the spot where user sessions can get split or lost.
Let us know how it works out or if you need any help. We've used this to do e-commerce as well as secure intranet applications (password protected as well as SSL encryption).
