You could also consider Flash as the display device for this. We've had a great deal of luck in this area and the added bonus is that you can print to PDF from flash directly if needed. (Just make sure that you use the print functionality out of Flash NOT the browser.)

With the right setup, everything can be completely vectored... although you could also place (and size) uploaded graphics as well.

They are thinking of using pdf to display the card after the user has posted their information. This pdf would be a template of 1 business card with some of the text being the variable. Will also include some artwork like a logo, etc.
