One public site we've done is the online store for the American Library Association at http://www.alastore.ala.org/
To your point 1, the search checks a multitude of criteria over 22,000+ products. That is, the search is not a "simple" search of a single field containing a single string. It searches multiple fields across two different catalogs of products, weighting each field separately, changes weights and does the search again, does a third search against a different set of weighted fields, then combines the results and presents them to the user. All in usually less than 1 second.

I would and probably will show him some of mine but two issues. 1. The look is not really what I would do for him most of mine the people did not want to pay extra for a designer and I am not that person. 2. The one most like the above is hosted at the school district which has 2 T1's but both are usually maxed from 9:30 to 3:30 so while it is a lot faster than the solution he has out of a data center it is slow compared to something hosted at a real data center.
