I've seen it and know what you're talking about.  I vaguely remember
reading about how to do it, but I'm afraid I don't remember where.  I've
checked my usual references without any results.

It seems like it was called 'console mode' or something like that.  No
toolbars, menus, status bars, title bars - just the main page.

Sorry to be of so little help, but at least you're not imagining things!
