Yes,

The user will then see your icon instead of the default ie icon in their
favorites by your site.  These do expire just like cookies expire, so it
will only last as long as their cookies live.

Several:

1.  get your graphics designer to make a favicon.ico for the site.  Also 
get a default to use for any other sites you host.
2.  have your 404.taf ignore requests for favicon.ico

I also find it kind of annoying to have my error.log filled with these 
requests. I've never gotten around to implementing suggestion 1.
