manual kinda sucks there, because the function notation makes you think
it uses a standard comma separated list of the elements to be compared,
but the usage column does show the expr's separated by a space. that
one bit me in the butt before.

I think the error is a non-printing character that appears around the
numbers.
Curiously, these expressions work within <@IF EXPR=...
