A little more research reveals that the realistic mobile market for web
sites consists of blackberries and treos. Treos have a regular html browser
and blackberries can have a full fledged browser, but come native with one
that makes a mess of tables.

Therefore, the simplest solution is to develop alternative websites with no
tables, no flash, and pages that have narrow width.

The WAP solutions would be more application/company specific, it seems, but
making a database of information searchable and accessible from consumers on
the move would be a tiny html design.
