There are a few variables that take place when you perform a query on a database.
 
For argument's sake, say it's the exact same setup, same database, and the same taf. The only difference with the taf is one has the dbms, and one has the search action.
 
The Direct DBMS action will be quicker than the search action if you don't have the neat little features of the search action features activated like "Get total number of matching rows" Or you've set the "Limit to" or "Start retrieval at row number". These features don't change the SQL query, but do require more juice from the WiTango server to process.
 
If you don't have these features enabled, I really can't see much difference between the 2. A good test is to save the 2 tafs as xml files and open them up in Dreamweaver and count the lines of code. If one has less lines of code, it'll take less time to process.

Is there any difference in speed between the search executed by a DBMS or a search action ( the search action has 24 criteria and joins 3 tables)
