I just ran into this same thing and found
that all the tags really needed to be closed you can closed even the <p> that
is why I have taken to using BBEdit I am sure there is a PC tool that does the
same. In fact I bet my Oxygen editor would do the same thing.

Having CSS Problems
I ran the same test using
the w3c validator. The closing tags are all image tags that I will close them
just the same but I don't believe are causing the problem, as they 'should' be
causing the same problem with all browsers. I've had one other reply from
someone who went through a similar attempt at doing this but was forced to give
up due to the same types of problems that I'm running into.
I've read about the box model hack for IE5.5 and I'm aware of the workarounds
but I can't seem to find anything on known issues with IE6. This appears to be
the only browser/version/platform that I'm having problems with (that is a
'recent' browser). If anyone can shed some light, or point me in the right
direction I'd be grateful.
Thanks,
Steve Smith

Steve,
Just sent a replay to you off list. Bunch of closing tags needed since you
are using
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
I just opened the source in BBedit latest version and ran a check. It is
great for that kind of stuff.

Forgive the non-Witango post here:
I've working on a static site for a customer and I'm trying my best to
move it towards Web Standards. However IE6.0 Windows is giving me fits.
I have two versions of the site:
http://www.oakbridge.ca/clients/treadle/index.html
works for IE6.0 Windows but doesn't work for other browsers/platforms.
http://www.oakbridge.ca/clients/treadle2/index.html
works for other browsers/platforms including Netscape and Firefox on
both platforms, Safari and even IE 5.2 Mac.
The problems should be fairly obvious on the main page. There is no
content in area to the right side of the navigational buttons.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear from you.
