Witango-Talk: insert action problem with text field

after a zillion cases of doing this, it's not working today. An  
insert action puts a text string into a text field. I notice that the  
insert action properly binds all the other inserted values, but not  
for this one field.  It just inserts a blank space instead of the  
text string. any ideas where to look for the problem?
