I was a big advocate of Primebase SQL. Not postgre sql.
Main reason I changed, was that going to php, I was working with the
engineers at primebase to give me a module for php, and we were
starting to test. I realized I was going to have to go through a
bunch of debugging, and after spending years doing that wtih witango/
primebase, I figured I would look at going with php/mysql, since I
knew they were well tested together.
Also, primebase is a serious performer, and I love it. And serving
millions of blobs, it is a bit faster than mysql on the same
hardware. However, with the dbs getting up over the hundreds of gigs
mark, primebase started to show some issues. And it has some
limitations in file size, and not 64bit compatible.
With mysql, I have it running on dual core x64 4800 processors, with
tons of ram, in x64 mode, on fedora 5, and it screams, and is rock
solid. We are in the process of setting up several replicated servers
also. In the past, I played with mysql, when at versions 4 and below.
But it didn't have certain things I needed. With v5, it is more than
we need, and then some, and I luv it. There were days that mysql was
considered more of a toy, but I can tell you, I have customers on
oracle, mssql, postgresql..... even if price was NOT an object, I
believe I would choose mysql on FC5. FC5 is so easy to setup mysql 5
with php 5, and then we add zend platform on top of it.
Our companies are growing, and we have had outside interest, one of
the reasons to move all opensource it makes it very attractive to
perspective buyers. There are other reasons why I am leaving witango,
but you can search the archives for that.
Anyway, mysql is up for us, serving millions of images a day, and we
are getting up 2 more db servers for the busy season over the next
couple of weeks.

I'm just wondering if you'd care to comment on the reasons you've
decided to
port your shop to MySQL.
If you've already covered this topic in a previous post, I'd
appreciate a
repost. I think others would also appreciate your analysis of the
pros/cons
behind your decision.

Subject: Witango-Talk: Some Good Work and A Few Good Men (geeks)
Just a quick note, we have been working for some time on some major
upgrades to our eventpix.com service. One of the new features, was an
updated guest image viewer designed in flash. I have had the design
in my head for 2 years, but just couldn't get it on my plate, too
much other stuff. So made a detailed spec, and sketches and looked to
farm out the flash programming. I built a webservice framework, and
planned on the flash UI being completely data driven by this
framework. Lockdata was contracted for the flash programming, and an
unnamed programmer, from this list was hired to take my webservice
framework, and build all the webservices necessary for the flash UI.
This programmer is unnamed, only cuz I don't know if he wants me to
tell people he is working for us. The flash UI beat my expectations,
and it is now live, serving millions of images a day.
You can check it out at http://www.eventpix.com/guest/ , just click
the view demo event. Be sure to try the slide show, and zoom loupe
tool. It also provides sepia and black and white images on the fly,
and many other cool features. It was a real team effort, and was a
tough transition for me to give over large projects and just manage
them, not DO them.
The Unnamed programmer, who is welcome to name himself, did such a
great job, he has been kept on to rebuild our entire lab module as an
ajax, webservice driven service, and it works great, although you
can't see it, only for member photographers. And unless he chooses to
move on, will probably be loaded with work from us for years to come.
All that to say, great work by lockdata and this programmer, and a
segway into saying, we need more help.
I am looking for 2 more programmers, to start over next month or so.
Please send in your resume to me privately, with your core
competencies, and experience. I am ESPECIALLY looking for witango
programmers with great PHP experience. We are moving all of our apps,
big ones first, to PHP/MYSQL. We have already made the mysql leap.
Thanks in advance.
