This finally came back. I have not had a chance to try the driver yet but
offer it as a a solution that might be reasonable to look at.

Dan, sorry to respond so late, but if your friend is still having
problems with the FM JDBC driver, they can try the one we wrote. It's
open source and can be downloaded from https://woof.dev.java.net.
