I just re-installed Tiger on an iMac which I was going to use as a test bed compiler/server. Imagine my dismay when tried a test compile with the Developer Studio (5.5.0.8) and I started getting a very peculiar error referencing issues with security and advising me to run -XLint...

So I checked the Java JVM and in fact, it had defaulted to 1.5 instead of 1.4.2. 1.4.2 was installed, but not being used. I tried following advice about using a new GUI from Apple to change this (Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences but that does not do the trick.)

I then followed some advice from Mac OS X hints and WAS able to get back to a Dev Studio compiler that worked. There was a flame war going on about whether this was suitable, but in fact the guy opposed to it gave the GUI advice which does not work in this situation... follow the advice from the first message. Works like a charm.
