If you possibly do it, move to JDBC rather than ODBC. You'll be

Download from where? I have found some at http://
mmmysql.sourceforge.net/ - are these recommended? If not, which
would you recommend?
Normally you can find the JDBC clients at the websites for the
database you want to use, and that's how I would start out.
Does DSN have to comply to a strict convention?
No. In this case it is what the database table is named. When setting
up your database, always use a name without spaces, of course. And
I'd avoid most special characters, too.
And for Filemaker?
Get that from Filemaker's website
OK. Got that and CocoaMySQL. When trying to connect to the database
server "test" database from a remote machine I get: "Unable to
connect to host. Be sure the address is correct and that you have
the necessary privileges".
.
.
I've downloaded and worked a bit with phpMyAdmin and got as far as
setting up a server & security. But when I move the config file to
the phpMyAdmin and try to login into the MySQL server I can't
connect to the server
Thanks for the help so far. I'm coming across too many "unknown
unknowns" to get anywhere at the moment
You might want to try downloading and using MAMP. It does the entire
mysql install and runs Apache and PHP, plus it automatically sets up
a webpage for you so you can access and set everything up.
Go to http://www.versiontracker.com/ and search on MAMP. In this
case, it will tell you the port number to connect to, which is not
the usual mySql port (I believe it's something weird like 8889), too.
