Hi Scott,
Happy Holidays. Sorry to hear about your hearing problem. I
developed Meniere's disease and lost most of my hearing on one side.
It's most noticeable in noisy rooms or listening with earbuds. Hope
your's is fixable.
After much research, I ended up with an Airport Express connected to
my stereo, which feeds four sets of speakers around the house through
an impedance-matching audio switch (manual). I can play my tunes
from any of my computers simply by selecting "stereo" (the name of my
airport) in iTunes. My tunes are kept on a server so any computer
can access them.
My Airport is wired into my 100BASE-T home network, and I have it
configured to accept AirTunes streams over the air and the wire. The
sound is flawless when played from my wired desktop. I get
occasional drop-outs when I play from my laptop wirelessly. I'm
thinking it might have something to do with DHCP lease renewal, but I
haven't confirmed this with a network analyzer.
There are still a few issues:
* non-iTunes streams, like BBC radio
* sound adjustment. I need to be at the computer that's streaming.
My Macbook has a remote, but the desktop doesn't.
BTW, the Airport is a high level output (500 mV), and caused clipping
when I plugged it into the phono input, which was the only available
on my old Fisher 500 tube receiver. I'm using the Tape Monitor, but
will probably just sacrifice the Tape Input, which I haven't used in
a decade.

Hello everyone,
I've searched and searched, and am just not finding what I'm
looking for, so I thought I would ask the inexhaustible
intellectual muscle of the list.
My main computer desk has 2 PC's and a Mac, plus I have a short-
wave radio and a shiny new iPod Touch. I like listening to all
sorts of music, video and even special white-noise for sound
therapy (to help with a hearing problem) - and I hate having
multiple sets of speakers crowding my setup.
I can run all my computers from one keyboard and mouse (Synergy),
so why can't I have just one volume knob?
Does anybody know of a good speaker system (home theatre?) or
compact audio mixer of some kind for handling multiple audio inputs?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
And, oh by the way - Happy Holidays, I hope everyone is having some
relaxing time off from work :-)
Scott,
