Sure, BIND 9 is available for Windows 2000 (binary) and can be compiled for 2003.

That sounds like a LOT of overhead for just dns, there has to be a windows version of bind or something.

Why not just run a VMware DNS appliance on the Windows 2003 server?

Hey webdude,

I understand your confusion! It took me awhile to figure it out myself!

Here goes:

- The current release of Server 2003 Web Edition is with Service Pack 2. This version does not have DNS and DHCP. - The older releases (pre-service pack 1) and with service pack 1 did have DNS & DHCP.

So, if you but the latest release, you won’t get DNS & DHCP. But, if you can find an older version (pre-service pack 2 release) then you will get DNS & DHCP.

If you do get your hands on a pre-service pack 2 release, you can still download and apply service pack 2 to your server.

Windows Server 2003 web edition does not have DNS, DHCP, or Active directory integrated with the web edition: https://msdn.one.microsoft.com/home.aspx? ApplicationID=4E9B12B3-3B2C-4697-9873-A8D8E5B96364&CultureCode=en- us&BenefitDetailGuid=709B8F04- B3EF-4C09-93BA-9E3D645CCDAD&AccessGuid=E705FFBC-97B8-4277- A410-6DBB6609A36F&SourceSystemCode=XEN&SubscriptionStatus=Active

Furthermore, the highest version you can go up to id SP2. There is no R2 for Server 2003 web edition. Microsoft has dropped the web edition, and is no longer available to purchase. There are still some copies around that stores and online sellers have in stock, but the SKU has been discontinued from the major distributors and isn’t available from Microsoft to purchase.

The editions are going to be:
- Small business Server (no good for web)
- Standard
- Enterprise
- Datacentre

So, you can use Web edition and install third party DNS, and use your router for DHCP. But if you need Windows DNS advanced features (delegation, forwarding, recursive lookup) and advanced DHCP (relay agent, multiple subnets, bootp) then you need standard edition server.

Subject: Witango-Talk: Off Topic Windows 2003 Web Edition

Hello,

Is anyone using this platform? I am trying to get some info on it and like usual, I am totally confused by any information from Microsoft.. Does it come with the DNS Server? I am looking to set up a secondary DNS server with a new machine. Looks like the Web Edition is the ticket. Do not need domain or domain controller... just a way to host multiple sites on multiple IPs.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
