The MySQL db is InnoDB (for transactions) myisam is fine
The table character set is utf8
the table Default collation is utf8_general_ci

No problemo amigo, so I guess your view-source just doesn't show the rest of your content? If it does show, try moving your variable outside the FONT element and see if that makes a difference.

If the content doesn't show, then it could be something funny with the character set and MySQL (which I have no experience with), like Ben mentioned.
