I had the same view as you, Scott, but had to move to Vista about 6 months
ago for development reasons. I was pleasantly surprised at how stable Vista
was and the UX wasn't that bad (omg User Access Control) after tweaking some
personalization settings. I run Vista on two laptops and my home PC now and
the experience is the same across teh board.
Further, I had the opportunity to talk to a cynical ex-MS employee a couple
weeks ago and he told me that the majority of the stability issues that
Vista had were due to the introduction of a new driver model in the Vista
kernel. Apparently "the people that code drivers are the worst programmers
in the world". Windows 7 is supposed to use the same kernel as Vista, so
hopefully we shouldn't see a repeat of the same issues.
For the record (and to not be a complete derail), I also run OS X 10.5 on
those two laptops and after experiencing the OS X WiTango developer UX with
5.0 I switched to using Windows and haven't gone back. <3 OS X, </3 WiTango
on OS X.
