I can confirm that little quick in HTML about over-populating a text input with a maxlength. It's always been the way it's worked for some reason.
As for your code, that looks fine and should work, assuming you are executing inside a @ROWS or @FOR block so that the @CURROW evaluates. I @LEFT and @RIGHT things all the time without issue.
