Bill,

Thank you for your support, it’s very much appreciated.

Release notes are currently being worked on. I have typed up about 90% of
what’s in the server, and then I have to do the studio. Both applications are
still being worked on, including researching, debugging and doing QA on the
various features. Some items that aren’t working well may be removed from the
release and added back in the first update. I will post some near-final
information on the website very soon.

Your question about a pre-built VM is an interesting one, and has a complex
answer. First off, it’s no secret that I’m a hosting provider and leveraging
Witango for the benefit of my hosting business is an important goal.
Unfortunately, it’s not one that I’ve had time to put a lot of thought into. To
be honest, the #1 item in my Witango strategy is to release 6.0 to existing
customers and keep the platform alive. #2 is to improve and integrate the
software into my hosting business. I’m not quite there yet.

Also, I’m a fan of Amazon EC2 and cloud computing in general. My own virtual
server is a cluster of multiple systems which allows me to mix and match
services as I need to. Because of this, I’ve already given thought to building
EC2 AMIs and shippable VHDs. The problem that I immediately ran into is that
most of Witango’s users have very different setups. I grant you that RH/CentOS
+ Apache + MySQL + Witango maybe a very natural mix, but there are probably
only a handful of customers out there using it today. Many users are on OS X
and 2/3 of all server licenses are for Windows. And databases vary widely. This
has given me reason to hold back on efforts to “standardize” a software stack
and instead put my efforts into making the Witango ‘component’ work well in a
large number of scenarios. I will return to this issue in 2011 when I have more
momentum in the platform. Until then, I hope that some users who use
virtualization or EC2 may start projects to build these reusable pre-built
stacks. I intend to focus an area of the website on the needs of hosting (ISPs,
IT departments, hardware, etc.) and I would be happy to host pages and
downloads of any such user created content.

In the long term, however, it only makes sense to make Witango as accessible to
people as possible, and pre-built stacks is definitely on “the list”.

Robert

Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: version 6 release schedule update; logo contest

Hi Robert,

Although I don't have any plans for going back into web app development I'm
looking at purchasing an Studio upgrade (5.5 --> 6) at the discounted price
plus a server to take me from linux 5 (.065) to 6 in order to support your
efforts and at least keep some of the work I had done available.

I was wondering if you might have some release notes on what has been upgraded?

Also, do you think you might make a package available as a virtual machine,
pre-configured with witango, apache, mysql, and appropriate database
connections? My configuration is now quite ancient (Fedora Core 4, Apache 2,
mysql 3.23), so I would find it attractive to move to VM so the hosting could
be handled elsewhere (maybe your shop).

Thanks.

It has been a while since our last update to the list, but the time seems to
have gone by in a flash! We are keeping our small team very busy working on
all aspects of the product, and everyone is now up-to-speed with their own
piece of the puzzle. We're all very excited about the progress we are making
daily towards the upcoming release of version 6.

As a result, we're happy to say that we've been able to complete our evaluation
of what needs to be done and narrow down our release schedule from a release
'season' to a release 'month' - today we are refining our version 6 release
time frame down from Fall 2010 to November 2010. Stay tuned for a release date!

Starting on October 1st, you will be able to pre-order upgrades and full
versions of version 6 products. All pre-release orders will benefit from an
additional 10% discount. Orders will be charged to credit cards or invoiced
only after version 6 is available.

We'd also like to invite you to participate in a contest to come up with our
new logo concept. After puzzling over ways to graphically distill the essense
of Witango, and since we've received so many generous offers of assistance,
we've decided to turn the logo concept over to the community. We are offering
a $200 discount on any Witango purchase for the winning entry.

So please submit your logo ideas! The idea should be more than a simple
"cocktail napkin" sketch, but it does not need to be a final art piece. We are
looking for a logo that specifically does not include or embed any text or
letters from the name of the product - it should be a graphic only, although
you can stylize and place the name alongside the graphic if you wish. Ideally
the logo would capture some aspect of Witango's function or spirit and scale
easily (in whole or in part) from larger sizes to desktop and browser icons.
