Wayne,

I'm unclear what you mean by "pre-release", the Studio on OSX v6.0.5 is the
initial release. It is intended for production use and, despite having some
quirks, can be trusted to produce proper TAF and TCF files. And yes, Studio 6
is completely rewritten in Java.

I am aware of the lack of file association on OSX. Unfortunately, the same code
that we created to get Windows to allow proper double-clicking of files on the
desktop doesn't apply to OSX, so we're back to the drawing board on that issue.
I hope to have it in v6.0.7.

I am also aware of the Open/Save dialog box issues, and again, I hope to have
it improved in v6.0.7. This is yet another area where our efforts on Windows
don't translate to OSX and therefore we must code everything twice. Since we
are still fixing up the same dialogs on Windows, we'll improve their look &
feel on OSX once they are stabilized.

Your last issue is one that I'm afraid comes with the territory with Java. The
Java application is actually just a single window (as far as OSX knows) and
what seem like individual windows within it are actually panes (which aren't
the same thing as windows). It's actually closer in concept to running a
virtual machine in a window. It may be notable that the Studio was always
structured this way on Windows.

So Yes. We will certainly be addressing as many issues as we can as time goes
by. It would be extremely helpful for you to submit your comments to the list
here, to [email protected] or to the bug reporting tool. We are aware of some
things that need improving, but it's helpful to know about your experiences and
thoughts are from using the product.

Subject: Witango-Talk: Dev Studio on OSX

I realise this is still pre-release, and that it is a JAVA application (correct
me if I'm wrong) but some of the non-Mac-like things are a bit annoying. I'm
wondering how many of them will be changed in the release version and how many
are the nature of the beast of a JAVA application.

If I create a new V6 TAF and save it to the desktop and then quit, at present
double clicking on the TAF won't start up the Dev Studio and open the document.
Something I am very used to from V5.5 and other applications across all
platforms.

Also, when in the studio, opening a file uses an abnormal dialog box for
navigating the hard drive and volumes. There are no shortcuts on the left and
my favourite tool (DefaultFolder) is not active.

I have to confess I am not a fan of the way the elements of the Dev Studio all
live within a rectangular space on the screen and don't share screen space with
other applications. I am used to having Witango, BBEdit, Photoshop etc all open
at once and sharing screen space.

Are these just restrictions I am going to have to get used to or will some of
them change in the release version?

Wayne Irvine
