To us a single application for one or more subdomains should be a
simple matter of making DNS resolve multiple domains to the same IP
address?

That does not solve the 'www.username.mydomain.com' though, which you
probably want to treat as an internal path ?
i.e. www.username.mydomain.com == www.mydomain.com/user/username ?

Is that what you are looking for ?
