Just to clarify, IIUC the mentoring organisation gets $500 on behalf of each
mentor. I suppose it's possible for the mentoring organisation to distribute
the money, but that burden is on the mentoring organisation itself.
Mentoring a student takes more time than most people expect. The benefit is
more Kudos than financial: it's more from getting someone else to implement
your (usually overambitious) idea(s); inviting new people into the community
and generally being able to get some cool stuff done by young, driven
individuals that may otherwise never see the light of day.
It'd be good to see some nice Witty updates to come out of the SoC.
