As you might have noticed: security for the browser file upload
control is quite tight (for good reasons) and there are not many ways
for interacting with it from JavaScript. Unfortunately, the security
measures vary from browsers to browser.

A good indicator of what is possible though is to look at how GMail
allows attachments of files !

But I think your approach might work well in all browsers (or at least
in those that need it -- chrome seems to not show the line edit
anyway) ?
