John,
Shoudn't you modify home_, rather than replacing that pointer with a
widget that you don't even insert in the widget tree?
e.g.:
home_->clear();
new WText("There was a click!", home_);
Or, when home_ is extended with member methods:
home_->doThisAndThat();
where doThisAndThat() modifies the widget.
