The paypal example still works for me.
The response I get is in the form of:
TOKEN=EC-5T539606ME4630649&TIMESTAMP=2014-11-05T14:38:30Z&CORRELATIONID=3459ed00d7634&ACK=Success&VERSION=92.0&BUILD=13630372

Did you configure your developer account on paypal correctly and provide
the information in wt_config.xml?

I agree with allowing you to customize the http client -- I propose we add
a virtual function for that.
