Hi MSI/WiX experts

Probably it is not appropriate for a commercial company to ask the
open source for assistance. If so my excuses in advance!

WiX is very promising. Within our company (see background below), we
have to deal with a complicated installer process. We currently
generate installs during our nightly build (InstallShield based) and
use them from the first day on every test system. Conflicts between
manual actions performed by developers and the MSI installer seems to
results in unpredictable behavior (wrong file versions, corrupted
registrations, automatic repairs etc).

The configuration part of WiX (as is) would already enable our
developers to maintain their part of the total installation (now we
have a dedicated install team). Besides that want to:
• Understand the root causes of unreliable installs.
• Identify actions that conflict with MSI.
• Prove that MSI is feasible for our installs and if so,
• Provide tooling to perform manual actions in a MSI compliant
way (like patching files on prototypes).

I’m looking for WiX developers interested in a temporary job. The
assignment is to help us with the issues mentions above. I need one or
two experienced engineers with profound knowledge of MSI. Initially to
verify MSI is suitable to deploy our complex installations on a
variety of systems. Then to proceed with WiX and integrate that
solution in our nightly builds. Optionally some tooling and extensions
to WiX are needed (e.g. a Tool for patching a system, XML generators
using higher level configuration files, etc). Of course these
additions will become available for the community.

Please contact me (assuming this request is appropriate) when you are
interested. Our R&D department is in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The
assignment will require an initial stay on site. So based on your
location, we will figure out how to proceed (we are able to arrange
temporary housing etc). After that tele-working is most likely more
feasible.

Best regards

Eric Kreuwels

Background Assignment
FEI Company develops high-tech electron microscopes used in various
markets (See www.fei.com). The SW platform is Microsoft based using
C++, (D)COM, Services, device drivers, C# and .NET. The SW is a
complex constellation of re-usable components, different user groups
and roles and many options and accessories. Therefore the installation
of the SW is a challenge. The installation also needs to support
partial installations in manufacturing, full installations and patches
on prototypes and systems in the field. Our installations are
currently done with InstallShield on top of MSI. We experience
conflicts between the MSI paradigm and the way engineers handle SW
updates and modifications on development PC's and prototypes. Also in
the field installations are unpredictable.
