I am investigating what's involved in writing an automatic updater for my
software. Can anyone point me to a good technical document on how to do simple
tasks in C/C++ such as iterate through the installed applications?

My software has multiple parts, each of which is installed with a different
installer. I only want to download updates for those parts of the product that
have been installed. When the updater runs, I'm thinking that it should:

- Determine which applications are installed
- Hit a website for a small text file with the current version (1 per installed
application)
- If the new version is greater than the installed version, download the update
(msi) and run it.

I haven't decided if this will run in the background as a service, a scheduled
task, or be a manual operation but that is secondary to getting the basic
functionality working.

If this post is better suited to the wix-users list, please let me know. I
asked here because it seemed like it might be something that the core team
might be interested in having if I get it working in a flexible way.

Thanks for the help
Craig
