Hi,

we currently are using WiX v2 for like 4 years now, but are now thinking
of moving to v3 for various reasons.

One first obstacle we are getting is quite surprisingly our product
version numbering.
We use the year as major version number -it was a marketing decision to
use same number for file/assembly major versions
as for the marketed version name - and the quarter as minor version
number
(so we are now in the process of finishing and releasing 2010.1.a.b, and
are starting to work on 2010.2.c.d).

These version numbers are no longer considered valid by candle in v3. It
only allows major and minor
version numbers up to 255, and build numbers up to 65535; there is no
check for revision.

I wonder where this validation is based upon ? I did not readily find
any guidelines or rules, saying that
major and minor cannot be greater than 255, so it looks a bit random to
me.

Any chance this might change in a (near) future release of WiX v3 ?

Thanks in advance for your reaction/answer.

Joris Spriet
