I noticed that WiX v3.5 includes new support for firewall exceptions for
Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. That's the name of the new
firewall in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, which happens to support many
more attributes for firewall rules and exceptions. However, it appears
some new firewall exception attributes are not supported by WiX yet.
Notably, support is missing for outbound exceptions. Since Windows
Firewall with Advanced Security allows all outbound traffic to cross the
firewall *by default*, most users will not need outbound firewall
exceptions because their default firewall configuration is permissive.
However, secure sites *do* need outbound firewall exceptions in case
their default firewall behavior has been changed by a site
administrator.
I was wondering if anyone is developing a "direction" attribute to add
to the FirewallException WiX extension. If not, I will ask my employer
if I may work on it. I would like to have this support for projects I
am working on. Please let me know if someone is already developing this
support.
