I know what you are saying here. The assignment agreement has been something I've been arguing against since the beginning. The problem is that I don't know how to mitigate the legal risks that the assignment agreement is designed to address. > Why the requirement for us to print off and post > a piece of paper to Microsoft? All other open source > projects I've worked on have been happy with a > message sent to the mailing list stating that I've read the > agreement and will abide by the terms within. The paper return drives me crazy as well. The signature is the most important piece of information on the assignment agreement. Faxing doesn't even seem to suffice. Not that faxing is much better, IMHO. I would like a purely electronic way to get the assignment agreement out of the way. If you can point me at the instructions for other projects where and email is acceptable for the assignment agreement, I would appreciate it. I'll point the people I argue with on the assignment agreement at those as examples of something maybe we can do with the WiX toolset as well. > The thought of my name and signature floating > around in the offices of a company I don't trust > (Microsoft) in a country with lax or non-existant > data-protection laws where personal data seems > to be lost/sold/stolen on a daily basis isn't a happy one. This seems very grandiose and overstated. The information provided in the assignment agreements is never publicly available. It isn't even accessible to people outside the legal department. I have to ask for the list of names to cross check contributions... one of the reasons it takes so long for me to get back to Gabor sometimes. <smile/> I would fear that the signed paper would get lost in the mail more than it being leaked/stolen by Microsoft. The information will never be sold. > I wonder how many other developers that could > be helping this project get put off when they > receive that email back from WiX Admin? About three (I'm on wixadmin). However, it is impossible to tell how many people never sent mail to wixadmin because sending email is too much hassle to begin with. I don't like the assignment agreement anymore than you do. If I had my way, everyone would just get along and we wouldn't need all these legal considerations. Then I could focus on the code and community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
