No registry entries were made. However, I think that was because I used the
wrong type for the registry entry.
If I change the type attribute in the Registry element from string to
expandable it works ok.
However I'm not sure about this approach. Is there a better way to do it
when I'm limited to WiX v2?

a element called EventSource that should do just this. I have however not
been able to find this extension library anywhere, nor have I been able to
determine if it works with wix v2.
It doesn't. The event source compiler extension is only in WiX v3.
