thank you both for your suggestions, I am sure that the .exe is working correctly and is in the place specified by the installer. It is also not part of the installation process itself but rather already present on the the users computer and so it is not the case that it has not been copied over correctly. I have done verbose logging like you have suggested but as I am no expert I'm not sure where I should be looking in the file produced? Any suggestions?
