Here's what I recall from memory - the MSI is cached under [Windows]\Installer folder, which takes up space. Space is also required on the drive that Windows is installed on in order to unpack local copies of files/cabs before they're placed in their final destinations.
If you review the MSI documentation on MSDN, it will explain it in more detail. Working around this issue will be difficult.
