90 projects & old hardware is my guess.

We have 120 projects across 3 solutions which takes my Core 2 Q6600
approximately 25 minutes to build from a command script. The C++, C# &
Fortran projects are done in the first 15 minutes & the installers take
the last 10 (could optimize more by using more Media ID's as the longest
step in WiX builds for me is always compiling the cabs).

We still use Visual Studio 2005 so I expect moving to VS2008 might make
reduce the build time. Also this machine will be 3 years old in a week
or 2 so it's nowhere near the cutting edge. It has 2 250 GB 7200 RPM
hard-drives in RAID 0 & 4 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 however I doubt newer
hardware would be able to cut much off a 15 minute build to be
"cost-effective".

Slightly off-topic:

Why does your build take three hours to complete? We used to have a
build that took over two hours to complete before we finally decided to
create different builds for all the separate components in the system.
This way, we significantly reduced build times. (We did have to redesign
some parts of the architecture however).
