Just to follow up for future readers, it looks like there was no problem to begin with. I tried smoke.exe and got no errors, except for on two merge modules. I think that my merge modules are just in better shape than I thought. Wow. :) I am used to getting some sort of output, at least Info messages, and some tools pass totally silently.
