I didn't receive the original message nor any of the other replies
from "Hamlet". It looks like nabble lets people post without
subscribing to the mailing list, and then those messages don't ever
arrive to the mailing list. I have seen this happen with other threads
too.

This is definitely suboptimal. I think users who post on nabble don't
even realize their messages didn't and will never arrive to the actual
mailing list. The mailing list admin (Rob?) should either enable posts
from non-subscribers (which is apparently a bad idea due to spam), or
make nabble read-only and don't allow posting there (if nabble allows
that).
