The version value handling is an extension. In general, when a property is set to string.Empty, it is removed. The proper test then is NOT SOME_PROPERTY.

I'm not very well versed with unmanaged code so this might as well be wrong. For now I have a workaround for my use case, but I wanted to know if this was a bug or not.
