Thanks for the help, scubasteve! In my hunt, I realized that it was choking on some ruby files that I hadn't intended to include anyway. Once I removed them, the harvesting process went fine. I didn't investigate further to see if it was indeed permissions issues, but one way or the other, you led me to the solution.
