No, this is not what should happen. This Id maps to a helper dll that is needed
to run most of the services, including the one that is failing.

What does that mean?

Thanks,

EK

Subject: [WiX-users] BA Installation failure with WiX 3.8 duing major upgrade

Hi,

I have two BAs created with WiX 3.8 in VS 2013. Each bundles some prerequisites
and .msi files (mostly IIS-hosted web services for the first BA and Windows
services for the second). Initial install and major upgrades from version 2.0.x
to 2.0.x+n have worked fine for months.

When I perform a major upgrade from 2.0.x to 2.1.y, though, the first BA runs
to completion with apparent success, but leaves out some dlls, causing the web
services to fail. The second BA fails when trying to start the first Windows
service it was supposed to upgrade. When I check the install directory, the
folder it lives in is no longer there.

When I uninstall version 2.0.x manually in "Programs and Features" first and
then run the BAs, everything works like a charm, and I can again run major
upgrades from 2.1.y to 2.1.y+m.

I have pored over the installer logs in some detail, but can't find anything
beyond the fact that the installer quit because the service failed to start.
I am attaching the log files of the failed Windows service installer and the
corresponding BA.

What am I missing? What else can I try to further diagnose the issue?

Thanks,

EK
