Subject: [dn42] dn42+Freifunk multicast routing/peering workshop @39c3

Hi,

We've made great progress regarding multicast support in our
Freifunk firmwares. Similar to the dn42 multicast attempts we face
a chicken & egg situation though: No users <-> no applications.

So to me an approach to tackle this would be to increase the reach
of multicast. Therefore I would like to work on making as many
hackspaces and community networks interconnected via multicast.
And would therefore like to do a self-organized session at the
39c3 in Hamburg end of this month.

Contentwise I'm thinking about preparing some small talk, like
15-30min. to cover the basics. And then diving into a hands-on
hacking and workshop session for 60-90min afterwards.

Ideally we'd have an easy step-by-step guide in the dn42 wiki
beforehand. But I'm not sure if that'd be ready in time, so far
there are only a few bits and pieces in there. Maybe we
might need to create a complete guide during the workshop in the
process :-).

I'm also not quite sure what best to advise about the following
potential pitfall with PIM which I've documented here,
which is that a unicast topology for PIM needs all routers
to be PIM capable:
https://wiki.dn42.dev/howto/pim-multicast-vs-unicast-issue
If anyone has any experience regarding how other organizations
might avoid this problem in the field I'd be very interested to
hear more about it.

Venue-wise I'd target an area in the 39c3 Freifunk assembly, I've heard
there should be session space with a projector again like we had two
years ago, so maybe for ~25-30 people.

Feel free to stop by in the #dn42-multicast IRC channel and let
us know if you'd be interested to join. Or if you'd be
interested to do some more beta testing this month with us (be)for(e)
the 39c3.

Regards, T_X
