It's the correct way, only that since a few years back, it seems mutter, the X11 window manager, treated MapRequest as unminimize not only for existing window but for new ones as well. The reason for this was that otherwise certain Wine applications would incorrectly start up as minimized. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=774333 .
