I did a minimal test here. I moved my sys/inotify.h out of the way
and recompiled wmaker (so the 'configure' script thought that
it was a pre-inotify system).

Things continue to work with the old polling method, in particular
I now see wmaker again in powertop's list with 2.5 wakeups:

 1,1% (  2,5)  wmaker : hrtimer_start_range_ns (hrtimer_wakeup)

So now I think I will update the description of wmaker-crm
in repo.or.cz, to reflect that it should work in other OSes
too.
