Given that it is a Window Manager for X it is not surprising (or a bad thing) that it depends on X. If X is deprecated there won't be much use for an X Window Manager either so that's not a problem. Therefore you won't be able to completely get rid of X dependency. At most you may be able to split X independent and X dependent parts, but given that the X independent parts have no use without the others, it would just add complexity without any gain. So IMO it's questionable if it worth it.
