Some distros are compatible with each other on different levels (package manager, system libraries, initialization scripts and login managaers), some don't. Sometimes you can't install binary package even on different version of the same distribution (unless you link everything statically, but that's just not good).
It is possible to use one source package to build RPMs for different distros (like Fedora, RHEL, SUSE, whatever), but due to little differences in macros, specfile would look like spaghetti of %ifdef's, each section maintained by different people. I am personally interested in having wmaker-next on Fedora for personal use.
