This does not seem to help inside my VMWare box, since the XServer I am using there is the VMWare one. xrandr "sees" only one screen, too, same in Gnome, same in lspci. It seems like VMWare does not actually show the second monitor to the system but leaves it to the xserver instead which will just pretend that you have one large screen (that's my speculation now). I found this article in the VMWare support communities: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/198341 I am still researching, but it seems like if your WM does not support the X hint I mentioned you're pretty lost...
