I have created a menu entry for gnome-screenshot like this (yes, I like OSX):

      (
        "Capture Area",
        SHORTCUT,
        "Shift+Mod1+4",
        EXEC,
        "gnome-screenshot -a -f /tmp/screenshot.png"
      ),

When I run the command by clicking the menu entry, everything is fine.
When I use the shortcut, gnome-screenshot dies with this message:

** Message: Unable to use GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface,
resorting to fallback X11.

(gnome-screenshot:30706): Gdk-CRITICAL **:
gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface: assertion 'width > 0 && height > 0'
failed

(gnome-screenshot:30706): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_window_resize:
assertion 'width > 0' failed

** (gnome-screenshot:30706): CRITICAL **: Unable to capture a
screenshot of any window

This may of course be asked in a mailing list dealing with
gnome-screenshot, but I'd really like to know how and why there is a
different environment for the program when run using a shortcut? I
mean, there MUST be some kind of difference, otherwise I would not run
into this...

Cheers,

Martin
