I'm seeing what I suspect is a related problem in wmii 2.5.2-1 from Debian, where I open an xterm in max layout, and if my first command is to ssh somewhere else, $COLUMNS and $LINES are still at 80x24. It appears to be that the xterm is getting mapped and framed _after_ it's already checked it's size. I find pressing enter before doing anything else solves this...
