It also shows NBCU management's lack of respect for the medium. Leno's 10 pm
show was actually a success, when judged by the venal goals set by the
network. Leno stayed above the minimum 1.5 share NBC guaranteed its
advertisers and was, by all accounts, profitable and meeting internal sales
goals. But very few viewers watch a network because of its ability to
maximize shareholder return. The goal of a tv network is to make a buck
while entertaining the public. NBC forgot- or no longer seriously cares-
about the second half of the equation.

Moving The Tonight Show to 12:05 would have been the ultimate insult to what
little remains of the program's storied legacy. Leno's agreeing to a
half-hour at 11:35 showed he had no problem being the agent of its final
debasement. Conan's refusal to be a part of the travesty shows, I think,
that he has more respect for the program than Leno and the network does.

One other note- did anyone else notice that Conan's final highlight
compilation of his seven months on the show had more funny stuff in it than
Leno's farewell gag reel, which had 17 years of potential material.
